Fintech SEO Case Study: Trading App That Lost Half its Traffic in Five Months

TL;DR

An Indian stock-recommendation and trading platform’s organic traffic collapsed roughly 50% between August and December 2024 the cause was two buried technical faults, not a content problem. Over a 16-month engagement, fixing them and rebuilding the site’s programmatic stock-page footprint took traffic to a sustained 400K+ monthly visits, lifted Authority Score to 54, and put the domain into AI Overview and LLM citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot.

The problem

A slide nobody had diagnosed yet

The client is an Indian fintech company running a stock-recommendation and discount trading platform anonymized here at their request, with no name, URL, or identifying detail beyond category. Organic traffic had been sliding since mid-2024, and by the time we started the SEO consulting in October 2024, nobody had traced it to a cause. Two faults, once found, explained most of it.

Fault 01 · Hidden footer

Site-wide internal links sat inside a footer that was effectively invisible to crawlers a rendering issue, not a content one. That cut off the main internal-linking channel into the site’s deepest pages: the individual stock, sector, and category pages a broking site’s long tail depends on.

Fault 02 · Wrong 302s

A chain of temporary (302) redirects sat where permanent (301) redirects belonged, so link equity from historical backlinks and internal links never consolidated onto the right canonical URLs. On a site leaning on thousands of stock-ticker pages, that’s a slow bleed, not a one-time hit.

There was also no dedicated news vertical and no systematic transactional content against high-intent queries like gold and silver rates.

Authority Score had been stuck in the same narrow band for well over a year: 51 in May 2024, 48 in June, 49 in July, and it would still be sitting at 51 come October 2025, fifteen months later.

What changed

Six moves, run in order

Fix the plumbing before touching content

The footer and redirect faults were resolved first. New pages built on top of a leaking link structure and a broken redirect chain would have underperformed regardless of quality — every later push needed a working foundation to compound on.

Stand up a news section — live Dec 2024

Stock-market content has a short shelf life and a high update cadence. A dedicated news vertical gave Google a reason to recrawl often and opened a path into Google News surfaces the site had never appeared in — launched within the engagement’s second month, ahead of any of the larger content builds.

Build a topical blog, hub-and-spoke

Informational content was structured around pillar hub pages with spoke articles linking back in, rather than scattered as disconnected posts — the standard way to build topical authority without diluting it.

Ship new transactional pages: gold & silver rates

High-volume, high-intent queries the site had no dedicated content against, built as a new page type from scratch rather than repurposed content. The gold-rates page went live in November 2025 and reached 53.2K clicks and position 9.1 within about three months. The silver-rates page followed in December 2025 and moved faster still — 47.2K clicks and position 8.5 in roughly two months. Both were the last major pieces shipped before the engagement closed, and both were still climbing when it did.

Optimize stocks, indices, sectors, and categories at scale

This is where the keyword data is clearest: the site now ranks in the top 15 for individual stock-ticker queries — company share prices, NSE ticker lookups, IPO GMP searches — across what has to be hundreds of individual listed-company pages. That’s a programmatic SEO build, not a hand-picked content calendar, and it’s the main driver behind the informational and commercial traffic gains below.

Build authority through media mentions

Placements and mentions across a mix of reference and media domains — including Wikipedia, PR Newswire, Times of India, Hindustan Times, Livemint, Moneycontrol, and Forbes India — supported the Authority Score climb alongside the on-site work.

Timeline

Dec ’24 – Jan ’25

Organic traffic bottoms out around 135K/mo, roughly five months after the pre-decline peak.

2025

Hub-and-spoke blog and the stock/indices/sectors/category programmatic build roll out; traffic recovers and climbs through the 300–480K/mo range.

Nov 2025

Gold-rates page goes live.

What I’d do differently

The trade-off this build didn’t manage

Navigational traffic fell 50% and transactional-intent traffic fell 60% between July 2024 and February 2026, even while informational and commercial traffic grew substantially. The programmatic stock-ticker build did its job, but it likely pulled internal link equity and search-console classification away from the site’s core transactional and navigational demand and that split was never given its own tracked target. A site this dependent on programmatic long-tail content needs an internal-linking strategy that explicitly protects its conversion pages, not just one that feeds the hub-and-spoke blog.

The “stagnant Authority Score” story also rests on only two verified points fifteen months apart 49 in July 2024, 51 in October 2025 that happen to land in the same band. That’s suggestive of a flat period, not proof of a continuously flat one; a tracked monthly baseline from day one would have made the claim airtight instead of inferred from two bookends.
