How it works

How this tool works

What it counts

  • Words: groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks that contain a letter or digit.
  • Characters: with and without spaces. Emoji and accented letters count as one.
  • Sentences: text ending in a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis. Abbreviations such as e.g. can add extra sentences.
  • Paragraphs: blocks of text separated by a blank line.

Reading and speaking time

Reading time uses about 238 words per minute, an average for adults reading non-fiction silently. Speaking time uses about 130 words per minute. Real speed varies by person and content.

Keyword density

Type a word or phrase to see how often it appears and what share of your words it makes up. Google gives no target density. Use this to spot overuse, and write for readers first.

Platform limits

The bars show how much of each limit you have used. Meta titles are cut by pixel width, not character count, so 60 characters is a guide. Platforms change limits, so check the current limit before you publish.

Questions

Common questions

How do I count words in a document?

Paste the text into the box. The count updates as you type. Words are groups of characters separated by whitespace that contain a letter or digit.

Does the character count include spaces?

The tool shows both counts: characters with spaces and characters without spaces.

How is reading time calculated?

Word count divided by 238 words per minute, rounded to the nearest second. It is an average, so your audience may read faster or slower.

What is a good keyword density?

Google gives no target. Repeating a phrase unnaturally can read as spam. Use the figure to catch overuse, not to hit a number.

Is my text stored?

No. The counts run in your browser. The text is not sent to any server. If you use the Save button, it is stored only in your own browser.
