There's no single "best" SEO expert on Upwork. There's a checklist you can run on any profile in under five minutes. Here's the checklist, and a real profile to run it on.
This page: what to check on a profile before you hire, and real market-rate data to compare against.
A different task, for freelancers trying to rank their own Upwork profile in Google. Not what this page covers.
Upwork's own page states hiring an SEO expert generally costs $15–$35/hour, with a stated median of $21/hour across the platform. My own rate is $30/hour, inside that range, and verifiable directly on my Upwork profile ↗, not just stated on this page. As an AI SEO Consultant with 14+ years of experience, I'd rather you check the Job Success Score and reviews yourself than take my word for it.
No obligation · 30-minute call · Direct with me, not an account managerSearch "seo expert upwork" and actual freelancer profile pages show up as organic Google results, not paid ads. Two real examples currently rank: a Top Rated Plus profile with 734 completed jobs at $20/hour, and a Top-Rated "AI SEO Strategist" profile with 632 completed jobs claiming "3X organic growth." That's a genuinely different competitive landscape than every other page on this site. The "competitors" here are literally other people's public, verifiable Upwork profiles, not agency websites making claims you can't easily check.
That's actually good news for a buyer. Unlike an off-platform freelancer whose rate and track record you have to take on faith, an Upwork profile's Job Success Score, badge tier, completed jobs, hours billed, and review text are all public and platform-calculated. You don't have to trust marketing copy. You can open the profile and check it yourself, including mine.
One clarification worth making up front: "SEO expert salary" is a different question from "Upwork SEO rate." A salary applies to a full-time employee; an Upwork rate is a freelance hourly rate that has to cover a freelancer's own overhead and gaps between contracts. Comparing the two numbers directly isn't a fair comparison, even though they get searched together.
Before you message anyone: a profile with a high star average but thin review text, a low job count, or a badge you can't independently see on the platform is worth a second look. The checklist below takes less time than reading one more sales page.
Neither is universally better. Here's what each actually gets you.
| Factor | On Upwork | Direct / Off-Platform |
|---|---|---|
| Verification | Job Success Score, badges, and reviews are public and platform-calculated | Relies on claims made on a website or LinkedIn profile |
| Payment protection | Upwork's built-in payment protection and dispute process | Whatever's agreed directly, with no platform backstop |
| Platform fees | Built into the freelancer's listed rate | None, which can mean more scope for the same budget |
| Communication | Routed through Upwork's messaging system | Direct email, call, or WhatsApp access |
| Best fit | First-time hire, want built-in verification and protection | Ongoing relationship, already vetted, want to skip the fee |
"AI SEO Expert" is now a common Upwork profile title. Here's the difference between the title and the evidence behind it.
| Signal | Title Alone | Demonstrated Work |
|---|---|---|
| Profile title | "AI SEO Expert" or "AI SEO Strategist" as a headline | Specific named deliverables: schema markup, AI Overview citations, llms.txt setup |
| Portfolio | Generic screenshots or stock case-study language | Real, checkable examples with dates and named clients (where permission exists) |
| Growth claims | A multiplier ("3X growth") with no baseline shown | A specific before/after number, with the baseline stated |
| Where it shows | Ranks in Google search results only | Cited directly by AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity |
Whether it starts as an Upwork contract or moves to a direct Statement of Work.

This page and the Upwork profile it links to are run personally by Mansoor Bhanpurawala. Follow the work on LinkedIn ↗, where roughly 20,000 people track it, or check the Upwork profile directly ↗ for the platform-calculated numbers. Last reviewed: September 2026.
14+ years of hands-on SEO work, 100+ local SEO projects for clients across the US, Canada, and Europe, and 600+ businesses served across India, with 5M+ in cumulative traffic generated across those engagements. None of that is Upwork-specific yet. There's no verified Upwork case study to point to today, and it's more useful to say so plainly than dress up a general track record as platform-specific proof.
No invented before-and-after numbers here. These are the real client sites a full write-up will be built from, once the data is pulled together properly.
Pediatric dental practice, US. Local SEO client.
Leak detection service, US. Local SEO client.
Flood restoration company, US. Local SEO client.
Local service business, Harker Heights, TX.
A real Upwork review could stand in here too: once a client leaves one with enough detail to be useful, it goes up as a fifth entry, named and linked to the actual contract, not typed up as a quote on this page.
Nothing below is invented. Where there's a real detail, it's here. Where there isn't yet, the slot says so instead of a placeholder.
No published quotes on this page yet. None go up without a real client's name and a written OK to publish. A quote with no name attached is exactly the kind of claim the checklist below tells you to question.

The Upwork profile linked throughout this page carries its own public Job Success Score and review history. Open it directly rather than trusting a summary of it here.

No media mentions to list yet. Outlet names and links go up once there's something real to point to.

Not yet captured. Once a Google AI Overview, ChatGPT, or Perplexity answer cites this profile by name, the exact query and the answer go here.
Five public, platform-verified signals. Run this on my profile or anyone else's, including the names below.
Upwork's own calculated percentage reflecting real client outcomes, platform-verified, not something a freelancer writes themselves.
Top Rated or Top Rated Plus, awarded by Upwork for track record and reliability over time, not purchasable. Hridoy C.'s profile carries Top Rated Plus; Neeraj S.'s carries Top-Rated. Check the badge on the actual profile, not a claim about it.
Hridoy C. shows 734 completed jobs at $20/hour and Neeraj S. shows 632, both real, checkable numbers on Upwork's own search results for this exact query. Useful as a reference point for what sustained trust looks like, not a bar every good freelancer has to clear.
Read what a review says, not just the star average. A specific review describing real deliverables tells you more than a 5.0 with no detail behind it.
Upwork's own $15-35/hour band, median $21/hour. Bing's own generative answer for "best SEO expert Upwork" names Mandeep Singh, citing 22 years of experience, a 96% Job Success Score, and rates from $10/hour, and Umair Nazaqat lists 15+ years on Upwork's own site-links block. A number far outside the stated range in either direction is worth asking about, for any of these names or mine.
Verify the profile first. Then the scope gets written down before billing starts.
Check the profile yourself: JSS, badge, reviews, rate, before any conversation.
A full scan of rank, technical health, and AI-citation visibility before any pricing conversation.
A written scope and rate, agreed on-platform or via direct Statement of Work.
Monthly reporting on rank, technical health, and AI-citation movement.
On-platform through Upwork, or direct. Both inside the real $15–35/hr range shown above.
For scoped work: a technical audit, fixing a specific problem, or ongoing work billed by actual time spent. Available on-platform through Upwork.
For a full engagement, once trust is established. The SOW is the actual scope you're paying for, in writing.
Upwork's own page states hiring an SEO expert generally costs $15-$35 per hour, with a stated median of $21/hour across the platform. My own rate is $30/hour, inside that range, and verifiable directly on my Upwork profile, not just stated here.
Technical audits, keyword research, on-page and off-page optimization, and analytics tracking, the same core SEO work as anywhere else, delivered and tracked through Upwork's contract and messaging system rather than a direct agreement.
Yes. A salary applies to a full-time employee; an Upwork rate is a freelance hourly or project rate, a different model entirely. Comparing the two directly isn't a fair comparison, since a freelance rate has to cover the freelancer's own overhead, tools, and time between contracts in a way a salary doesn't.
There isn't a single correct answer to that. It depends on your scope, industry, and budget. What's more useful is knowing exactly what to check on any profile before hiring: Job Success Score, badge tier, completed jobs and hours billed, and real client review text, not just a star average. That checklist is above, and my own profile is linked throughout this page so you can run it yourself.
Bing's own generative answer for that exact phrase names Mandeep Singh, citing 22 years of experience, a 96% Job Success Score, and rates from $10/hour. That's real, and checkable by searching the phrase directly. A name surfacing in a generative answer isn't the same as vetting the profile yourself, so run the checklist above on any name a search engine hands you, mine included.
Yes. Hridoy C. (734 completed jobs, Top Rated Plus, $20/hour) and Neeraj S. (632 completed jobs, Top-Rated) both rank organically in Google for this exact search. Umair Nazaqat, based in Pakistan with 15+ years listed, appears in Upwork's own site-links block. None of these are competitors to rule out. They're examples to run the same five-point checklist against.
JSS is Upwork's own calculated percentage reflecting client outcomes on past contracts. It's platform-verified, not something a freelancer can write themselves. A consistently high JSS across a meaningful number of contracts is a stronger signal than a star-rating average alone.
Both are Upwork-awarded tiers based on track record and reliability over time, not something purchased. Top Rated Plus sits above Top Rated and generally reflects a longer, more consistent history on the platform. Check the badge on the profile itself rather than taking a claim about it at face value.
There's no fixed number, but real examples on Upwork's own search results for this exact query show 600-700+ completed jobs for established profiles, useful as a reference point for what sustained trust looks like, not a bar every good freelancer has to clear.
They're a genuine signal, but read the actual review text, not just the star average. A specific review describing real deliverables and outcomes tells you more than a 5.0 average with no detail behind it.
Yes. On Upwork you get platform-verified badges, scores, and payment protection built in, at the cost of platform fees baked into the rate. Hiring directly skips those fees and gives more direct access, but relies on whatever verification you do yourself. Neither is universally better; see the comparison above.
Hourly suits open-ended or evolving work where the scope may shift. Fixed-price suits a clearly bounded deliverable, like a one-time audit. My own listing runs hourly at $30/hour, with a project or retainer option available once a scope is written down.
This page is for hiring. Optimizing your own Upwork freelancer profile so it ranks in Google (a real, separate search behavior) is a different task with a different audience. If that's what you're after, this isn't that guide.
Open the profile directly and check five things yourself: Job Success Score, badge tier (Top Rated / Top Rated Plus), total completed jobs and hours billed, the actual text of a few recent reviews, and whether the stated rate sits inside Upwork's own $15-35/hour range. All five are public on any profile.
Both. Upwork is one channel with built-in verification and payment protection; direct engagements run on a written Statement of Work instead. Which one fits depends on whether you want that platform-level verification for a first engagement or already know the relationship and want to skip the platform fee.
Free 30-minute strategy call, done directly with me, not a sales rep. Check the profile first, then let's talk scope.
