Hiring, Not Freelancing

Freelance SEO Consultant

Real market rates, what the work actually includes, and the freelancer-vs-agency trade-offs. Whether you're hiring a freelance SEO consultant or searching for an SEO expert freelancer, it's the same decision.

⚒
Quick check before you read on

This page is for businesses looking to hire a freelance SEO consultant. If you're trying to become one yourself, the "what the work actually involves" section below is still useful, but the hiring and pricing sections aren't written for you.

Freelance SEO rates run roughly $15-45/hour depending on market and experience, with global platforms like Upwork generally listing $15-35/hour. I charge $30/hour for scoped work, inside that range, not the cheapest number in it, or a monthly retainer priced against a written Statement of Work for a full engagement. As an AI SEO Consultant with 14+ years of experience, I'd rather you compare that number against real market data than a vague "competitive rates" claim.

Why This Matters Here

Freelance SEO pricing is a genuinely confusing market to shop in

Search "freelance SEO consultant" and the rate claims you'll find don't agree with each other, sometimes on the same page. Truelancer's own results page states that freelancers "typically charge between USD 50 and 120 per hour" while listing an individual offering the same work at $3/hour, directly above it. That's an internally contradictory claim on a single page, not a hypothetical example. That kind of inconsistency is common enough in this market that a buyer needs a way to sanity-check a quote against something real, not just trust whatever number shows up first.

The freelancer-vs-agency choice itself is a real trade-off, not a marketing angle. A freelancer usually means the same person handling strategy, execution, and reporting throughout: direct access, lower overhead, but less bench strength if a project suddenly needs more hands. An agency usually means more people and more capacity, but also more layers between you and the person actually doing the work, and pricing that reflects the overhead of running a team.

One more thing worth knowing: even a fully generic search like "freelance SEO consultant," with no city name attached, still surfaces local, individually-run businesses in Google's Local Pack based on where the search happens. That's direct evidence that being a freelancer doesn't put you at a disadvantage against agencies for local visibility. The signals that matter there don't care about company size.

On rate shopping: a quote that changes once you're already in the conversation is a bigger warning sign than a quote that's simply higher than another one. Get the number and the scope in writing together, before anything starts.

What a freelance SEO consultant actually does

Five core areas, plus the one most freelance listings still treat as optional.

01

Technical Audits

Finding broken links, crawl errors, site-speed problems, and indexing issues before anything else gets built on top of them.

02

Keyword Research

Finding the actual terms your buyers search, not just the highest-volume ones. Volume and buying intent aren't the same thing.

03

On-Page Optimization

Meta tags, headings, and content structure built around how both search engines and AI tools actually parse a page.

04

Off-Page SEO

Building authoritative backlinks and digital PR that actually move domain trust, not link volume for its own sake.

05

Analytics Tracking & AI SEO

Ongoing monitoring through Search Console and Analytics, plus, increasingly the differentiator, structuring content so AI tools cite it directly, not just so it ranks.

Freelancer vs. agency

Neither is universally right. This is the honest comparison, not the version written to make one side look bad.

FactorFreelancerAgency
Who does the workSame person for strategy, execution, and reportingOften split across an account manager and a rotating execution team

Track Record

No freelancer-specific case study yet. Here's what's real instead.

This page argues that a freelancer's claims need to be checkable, so it isn't going to fill this section with an unverified client story just to look complete. This page and the work behind it are run personally by Mansoor Bhanpurawala. Follow the work on LinkedIn. Last reviewed: September 2026.

I haven't built a case study framed specifically around a freelance hiring decision yet. What's actually checkable: 100+ local SEO projects delivered for clients across the US, Canada, and Europe over 14+ years, 600+ businesses served across India overall, and 5M+ cumulative traffic generated across those engagements. The four real client sites below are what a freelancer-specific case study would draw its evidence from.

Want a case study built specifically around a freelance hiring decision instead? Say so, and I'll build one properly, with a real client's permission, rather than publish a placeholder.

Case Studies

Four case studies, in progress. Real clients, numbers pending.

No invented before-and-after numbers here. These are the four real engagements a full case study will be built from once the data is pulled together properly, not a placeholder metric that outlives its "temporary" label.

Case study in progress

kidsfirstdentalcolumbia.com

Pediatric dental practice, US. Local SEO client, delivered on the same direct-access, no-account-manager basis this page argues a freelancer should offer.

Case study in progress

ezleakdetection.com

Leak detection service, US. Same standard applies: real, live, and checkable, not a freelance-specific result yet.

Trust & Proof

Reviews, mentions, and citations, going up as they're confirmed.

Nothing below is invented. Where a real detail exists, it's here. Where it doesn't yet, the slot says so instead of a placeholder number, the same standard this page holds every freelancer or agency pitch to.

What clients say

No published quotes yet. None go up without a real client's name and their permission to publish. A fabricated quote is exactly what the checklist below tells you to watch for in anyone you hire, including me.

Before You Hire Anyone

Hiring a freelance SEO consultant? Here's what to actually check.

A checklist you can run against anyone you're evaluating, freelancer or agency, including me, built from this page's own real research rather than a generic "red flags" list:

  • ✓
A rate that doesn't contradict itself on the same page. Truelancer's own results page currently claims freelancers "typically charge $50-120/hour" while advertising an individual at $3/hour, on that same page. Ask any candidate for their number in writing before trusting a range that vague.
  • ✓
A specific platform, not a vague pedigree claim. Bing's own definitional answer for "freelance SEO consultant" currently names Toptal and Clutch; Google's AI Overview for "hire freelance SEO consultant" names Upwork and PeoplePerHour, and Bing's version for the same phrase adds The Work Crowd. If a freelancer claims a platform track record, ask which one, specifically.
  • ✓
A citation you verify yourself, not one handed to you. Google's AI Overview for "hire freelance SEO consultant" currently names Anand Kumar Jha as an example of a specialized independent professional, a real, checkable citation, not an endorsement or a knock on anyone. Run any name you're given through the same check yourself.
  • ✓
The exact phrase behind any visibility claim. Search "ai freelance SEO consultant" and Bing drops the "ai" modifier entirely, returning a plain Local Pack for "freelance SEO consultant" instead, in which Jay Parmar, SEO Consultant currently appears by name. A visibility claim tied to one exact phrase doesn't automatically carry over to a different one.
  • ✓
The written SOW before either pricing model kicks in. Hourly or retainer, a freelancer unwilling to put scope in writing is a bigger risk than one whose rate simply runs higher than another quote.
How We'd Work Together

What happens after you book the call

The scope gets written down before any billing starts, hourly or retainer.

01

Audit

A full scan of rank, technical health, and AI-citation visibility before any pricing conversation.

02

Scope

A written scope of work and a rate, hourly or retainer, agreed before anything starts.

03

Execution

On-page, technical, and AI-SEO work, done in the order the audit says matters most.

04

Reporting

Monthly reporting on rank, technical health, and AI-citation movement, with the underlying data included.

Pricing

Two ways to work together

Both inside the real market range shown above. Never a number that shifts once we're talking.

Hourly, $30/hour

For scoped work: a technical audit, fixing a specific problem, or ongoing work billed by actual time spent.

Retainer, priced against a Statement of Work

For a full engagement: local SEO, AI-SEO, or a mix, run together monthly. The SOW is the actual scope you're paying for, in writing.

Frequently Asked

Freelance SEO consultant: frequently asked questions

Are you looking to hire a freelance SEO consultant, or trying to become one?

This page is for the first case, hiring a freelance SEO consultant for your business. If you're trying to start freelancing in SEO yourself, this isn't that guide; the framework below on what the work actually involves is still useful background, but the pricing and hiring sections are written for a buyer, not a freelancer-in-training.

How much does a freelance SEO consultant cost?

Real market range: roughly $15-45/hour for South Asia-based freelancers, with global platforms like Upwork generally listing $15-35/hour. My own rate is $30/hour for scoped work, or a monthly retainer priced against a Statement of Work for a full engagement, inside that range, not positioned as the cheapest option in it.

What does a freelance SEO consultant actually do, day to day?

Technical audits to find broken links, speed issues, and crawl errors; keyword research; on-page work like meta tags, headings, and content structure; off-page work like backlink building; and ongoing analytics tracking through Search Console and Analytics. Increasingly also AI SEO/GEO work, structuring content so AI tools cite it, not just so Google ranks it.

Is a freelance SEO consultant better than an agency?

Neither is universally better. The trade-off is direct access and lower overhead versus a larger team's bandwidth and backup coverage. A freelancer usually means the same person doing strategy, execution, and reporting throughout; an agency usually means more hands but more layers between you and the actual work.

How do I know a freelancer's quoted rate isn't a bait-and-switch?

Watch for internally inconsistent pricing on the same page. Truelancer's own results page currently claims freelancers "typically charge $50-120/hour" while advertising an individual at $3/hour on the same results page. Ask for the rate in writing, tied to a specific scope, before any work starts; a number that shifts once you're in the conversation is the actual red flag, not the number itself.

Can a freelance SEO consultant really handle a full engagement without a team?

For most small-to-mid-sized businesses, yes. A single experienced freelancer covers audit, strategy, on-page, and reporting directly. Where it stops making sense is very large-scale content production or link-building campaigns that genuinely need multiple hands; a good freelancer says so upfront rather than overselling capacity they don't have.

Do freelance SEO consultants still matter for local search, or only agencies?

They matter directly. Google still surfaces local, individually-run SEO businesses in Local Pack results even for generic, non-geo-qualified searches, which is direct evidence that local signals aren't an agency-only advantage.

Where do people actually find freelance SEO consultants to hire?

Real, current answers vary by exact phrase searched. Google's AI Overview for "best freelance SEO consultant" names Toptal and Upwork; the same box for "hire freelance SEO consultant" names Upwork alongside independent professionals such as Anand Kumar Jha; Bing's own definitional answer for the plain phrase cites Toptal and Clutch. Platforms named this way aren't endorsements from me, they're what search engines currently point buyers toward, and worth checking directly rather than taking anyone's word for it.

Does a visibility claim on one search phrase mean it holds up on another?

No, and that's worth knowing before trusting one. Search "ai freelance SEO consultant" and Bing drops the "ai" modifier entirely, returning a plain Local Pack for "freelance SEO consultant" instead, in which Jay Parmar, SEO Consultant currently appears by name. A visibility claim tied to one exact phrase doesn't carry over automatically to a different one, freelancer or agency.

What's the difference between hourly and retainer pricing for a freelance SEO consultant?

Hourly billing fits scoped, bounded work, an audit, a specific fix, where the size of the job is already clear. A retainer, priced against a written Statement of Work, fits an ongoing full engagement where the scope runs monthly rather than task by task.

How do I structure a contract with a freelance SEO consultant?

At minimum: a written scope of work, the billing structure (hourly or retainer) stated in the same document, reporting cadence, and what happens if either side wants to end the engagement. A freelancer unwilling to put scope in writing is a bigger risk than one whose rate is on the higher end.

What is AI SEO and does a freelance SEO consultant typically offer it?

AI SEO (GEO) structures content so tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity cite a business directly in their answers. Not every freelancer offers it yet. Ask to see a real example of content they've built this way, since it's increasingly listed as a buzzword on freelance profiles without evidence behind it.

How long does it take to see results working with a freelance SEO consultant?

Technical fixes typically move within weeks. Meaningful ranking movement usually takes 3-6 months, freelancer or agency alike. The engagement structure doesn't change how search engines process changes, only how the work itself gets delivered.

Do you offer ORM as a freelance SEO consultant?

Yes. Reputation monitoring, review growth, and cleanup of outdated or negative content, run alongside the core SEO work rather than as a separate engagement.

What happens if a freelance SEO consultant gets overloaded with multiple clients?

Ask directly how many active clients they're running and what their reporting cadence looks like before signing anything. A freelancer stretched too thin usually shows it first in slower response times and vaguer monthly reports, both things you can ask to see examples of upfront.
