GEO Consultant: Get Named in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews

I'm Mansoor Bhanpurawala. I've done SEO since 2012. Generative engine optimization makes your brand easy for AI systems to find, understand and name. That includes Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which I treat as part of GEO.

Quick answer: GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of making your brand visible and citable in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and Google AI Overviews. It rests on indexable pages, clear entities, answer-first content, third-party mentions and measured prompt testing. Nobody can guarantee a citation.

What GEO and AI Overview work covers

Nine parts. AI Overviews are one of them.

I do this work myself. For scope and cost, message me on WhatsApp or call +91 90331 72192.

AI visibility baseline

Where you are named today.

  • A fixed prompt set built from your buyers' questions
  • Tests in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and Google AI Mode
  • Who gets named, in what order and with which claims
  • Wrong or outdated facts about your brand
  • Competitors that win each prompt
  • Repeat monthly to see movement
You will see: a baseline and a monthly trend.

Entity and brand clarity

Make it obvious who you are.

  • One consistent name, description and category across the web
  • Organization and Person schema with sameAs
  • Wikipedia, Wikidata and knowledge panel checks, never forced
  • Founder and team pages with proof
  • Clear service and location statements
  • Corrections for wrong facts
You will see: consistent descriptions in AI answers.

Answer-first, citable content

Write passages an AI can quote.

  • Short direct answers near the top
  • Self-contained paragraphs that make sense out of context
  • Exact numbers, dates and sources
  • Comparison tables and definitions
  • Original data and first-hand evidence
  • Plain, neutral wording for facts
You will see: your passages quoted.

Third-party mentions

AI systems lean on what others say about you.

  • Digital PR and expert commentary
  • Reviews and directory profiles customers use
  • Mentions in comparison and best-of pages
  • Community answers where it fits the rules
  • Podcasts, interviews and talks
  • Honest asks for reviews
You will see: more independent sources naming you.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode (AIO)

Google runs on its index and its snippet rules.

  • Pages indexed, crawlable and eligible for snippets
  • Snippet controls checked: nosnippet, max-snippet, data-nosnippet
  • Query research for terms that trigger AI Overviews
  • Answer quality against the sources cited today
  • Merchant Center and product data for shopping queries
  • Search Console tracking, remembering AI feature clicks are counted in web totals
You will see: AI Overview impressions and clicks over time.

Crawler access

Let in the bots you want, block the rest on purpose.

  • robots.txt rules for Googlebot, Google-Extended, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others
  • CDN and firewall checks
  • Server-rendered answers in plain HTML
  • llms.txt as optional hygiene, with honest expectations
  • Log review where logs exist
  • Rate-limit and cost review
You will see: AI bot visits in logs and referrals in GA4.

Structured data and technical base

Machine-readable facts.

  • Organization, Person, Article, Product, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList
  • Valid, non-duplicated JSON-LD
  • Fast, stable pages
  • Clean canonical and sitemap setup
  • Product feeds where relevant
  • Core Web Vitals review
You will see: clean validation and fewer ambiguous pages.

Measurement

Prove that visibility turns into visits.

  • Prompt-test log with date, engine, wording and result
  • GA4 segments for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and similar referrers
  • Branded search trend in Search Console
  • Assisted conversions from AI referrals
  • Share of voice against competitors
  • Quarterly review
You will see: AI referrals and branded search growth.

Reputation and correction

When AI gets you wrong.

  • Spot wrong claims about price, services or location
  • Fix the source pages that feed the error
  • Publish clear fact pages
  • Report errors through each tool where possible
  • Track until corrected
  • Policy review for YMYL topics
You will see: corrected answers over time.
How a GEO project runs

Seven steps from baseline to repeatable monthly tests.

GEO is measured by repeated tests. A single screenshot proves nothing.

01

Prompt set and baseline

We write 30 to 60 prompts that buyers use, then test them across engines and record every answer.

Output: Baseline with citations

02

Source analysis

I read which pages and sites the engines cite for your category, and why they fit.

Output: Citation source map

03

Fix the foundation

Indexing, crawler access, schema, entity pages and wrong facts come first.

Output: Technical and entity fixes

04

Build citable pages

Answer-first pages, comparison pages, data and proof written for your buyers.

Output: Priority page list and drafts

05

Earn mentions

Digital PR, reviews, listings and expert commentary on sites the engines already cite.

Output: Mention plan and results

06

Re-test monthly

Same prompts, same method. Wording variants added. Changes logged.

Output: Month-on-month comparison

07

Report and refine

GA4 referrals, branded search, Search Console and prompt results in one report.

Output: Monthly report

The GEO checklist

36 checks for AI visibility.

This is the working list. It covers AI Overviews and the other assistants.

  • Brand named the same way everywhere
  • Organization schema with sameAs

In my September 2026 test, Google showed an AI Overview for four of four "ecommerce seo consultant" phrasings. The named agencies changed with the wording, and Google AI Mode named a different set again. That is why I test several phrasings and several engines instead of reporting one screenshot.

What I see go wrong

Eight GEO mistakes.

Treating GEO as a trick

There is no secret markup. AI answers draw on content that is clear, accurate and widely corroborated.

Believing llms.txt is a switch

No major AI search engine has confirmed it uses llms.txt for ranking or citation. I add it as cheap hygiene, not as a lever.

Testing once

AI answers vary by wording, day and model. One screenshot proves little. Use a fixed prompt set and repeat it.

Blocking all AI bots, or none

Decide which bots serve you. Blocking Googlebot-adjacent or search bots by accident removes you from answers.

Ignoring third-party mentions

AI systems lean on what other sites say. Your own claims about yourself count for less.

Chasing a single engine

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google differ. Foundations help all of them.

Ignoring wrong facts

If an assistant states a wrong price or service, find the source and fix it.

Forgetting traditional SEO

Google AI Overviews draw on Google's index. Weak SEO weakens AIO.

Jul to Sep 2025. Monthly clicks went from about 150 to about 3,200 in three months.

Read these numbers with care.

AI Overview impressions measure visibility, not sales. The AI visibility dashboard counts for the fintech platform have no earlier baseline, so they show scale, not growth. AI referrals from assistants are still small for most sites. I report them anyway because they are the early signal.

Each chart draws the confirmed start and end values from Search Console as bars. They are not daily data and show no curve in between. Exact monthly values come from the CSV exports. Search Console measures clicks and impressions, not revenue. Each property had several kinds of work running at once, so no chart isolates one service. Client names are withheld at their request. Screenshots available on a call.

Case studies

AI visibility in three businesses.

Each started with finding where AI answers already named the brand.

E-commerce

A UK jewellery retailer in AI answers

Found: an e-commerce store selling to the UK.

Did: site speed, schema, Merchant Center feed, buying guides.

Result: 65,500 AI Overview impressions in three months, 117K AI-feature impressions in the UK against 1.78K in the US.

What went wrong: impression counts are visibility, not sales. Revenue was not part of the data I could share.
SaaS

An accounting SaaS with the wrong traffic

Found: 3,980 clicks a quarter, zero non-branded.

Did: non-branded content, use-case pages, two free calculators, a comparison page, five directory listings.

Result: 0 to 445 non-branded clicks, 52,300 impressions, 104 AI-assistant visits.

What went wrong: branded clicks fell 31% and signups were never tracked.
Fintech

An Indian platform that lost half its traffic

Found: a footer hidden from crawlers and 302 redirects where 301s belonged.

Did: fixed both first, then a news section, hub-and-spoke blog, gold and silver rate pages, programmatic stock pages.

Result: Gold-rates page reached 53.2K clicks in about 3 months and silver-rates 47.2K in about 2.

What went wrong: navigational traffic fell 50% and transactional 60% as link equity moved to programmatic pages.
How long it takes

Timelines from my own projects.

Nobody can promise a date. These ranges come from my own projects.

2 to 6 weeks

Foundation fixes

Crawler access, schema and wrong facts can be fixed fast.

About 4 months

First AI visits

An accounting SaaS saw 104 AI-assistant visits within four months.

3 months

AI Overview impressions

A UK jewellery retailer reached 65,500 AI Overview impressions in three months.

6 to 12 months

Mentions compound

Third-party mentions and authority take longest to build.

Engines update often. Plan for monthly testing, not a one-off fix.

ROI and KPIs

I measure visibility, visits and accuracy.

Prompt share of voice

Share of prompts where your brand is named, against competitors.

AI Overview impressions

Impressions in Google generative features where available.

AI referrals

GA4 visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot.

Branded search

Branded impressions and clicks in Search Console.

Accuracy

Share of AI answers about you that are correct.

If a KPI does not move, I say so and change the plan. I will not hide behind "rankings improved."

What it costs

Five things decide the price.

I do not publish a price list, because the same budget buys different work depending on these factors. Message me on WhatsApp or call +91 90331 72192. I quote after I see your site.

Category competition

Crowded categories need more mentions and better pages.

Engines in scope

Google only, or five engines.

Prompt volume

Thirty prompts and three hundred need different effort.

Existing authority

Brands with mentions respond faster.

Test cadence

Monthly testing costs more than a one-off audit.

Who this is for

  • Buyers in your category ask AI tools for recommendations.
  • You are a SaaS, service, finance, health or B2B brand.
  • You already rank but are not named in AI answers.
  • You want a measured plan, not a promise.

Who I am not the right fit for

FAQ

Questions people ask

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the practice of making your brand visible and citable in AI-generated answers from tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and Google AI Overviews. It combines indexable, answer-first content, clear entities, third-party mentions and repeated testing.

What are AI Overviews and AIO?

AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated summaries at the top of some search results. "AIO" is shorthand for optimising to appear in them. I cover it inside GEO because it relies on the same foundations.

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

AEO targets direct answers in search features such as snippets and voice. GEO targets being named in generative tools. They share content foundations. See my AEO page.

Is GEO different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. Google AI Overviews draw on Google's index, and other assistants retrieve from the web. Weak SEO weakens GEO. GEO adds entity work, citable passages, third-party mentions and prompt testing.

Can you guarantee that ChatGPT will mention my brand?

No. Nobody controls these systems. I raise the odds, test with a fixed prompt set and report what changes.

Does llms.txt work?

No major AI search engine has confirmed that it uses llms.txt for ranking or citation. I add it on request as low-cost hygiene.

Should I block AI crawlers?

It depends on your goals. If you want to appear in AI answers, you need to let the relevant search bots in. I review each bot and decide with you.

How do you track AI visibility?

I run a fixed set of prompts monthly across engines, log who is named, then compare with GA4 AI referrals, branded search and Search Console.

How do AI Overviews show up in Search Console?

Google counts clicks and impressions from AI features in the web search totals. There is no clean separate report, so I combine Search Console with SERP checks and third-party tracking.

How long does GEO take?

Foundation fixes can land in weeks. Citations from new mentions usually take months. The UK jewellery retailer reached 65,500 AI Overview impressions in three months.

Do AI answers change often?

Yes. Wording, model updates and retrieval change results. That is why I use repeated tests.

What do you need to start?

Your URL, your top competitors, ten questions your buyers ask and access to Search Console and GA4.

Send your URL. I'll test what AI says about you.
